On a horrible rainy and windy morning
Great Western hosted Brig’O Dee in a game that ended in a 6 goal
thriller! Brig won the toss and decided to switch sides and play with the
strong wind. Within 6 mins Brig opened the scoring, when after a silly foul
given away by Mitchell near the touchline and some 30 yards out John Harris
decided to have a shot at goal. As the ball was hit high and hard it looked to
be heading out but as the ball was coming down the Western goalie misjudged the
flight of the ball and it ended up in the back of the net. Brig doubled their
lead in 34 mins when Beaton was fouled in the box and the Ref had no hesitation
in pointing to the spot. Steve “Bertie” Mcgregor smashed the
penalty into the net. Up to this point Western had huffed and puffed but showed
no real cutting edge, however that was to change when Western’s
Ross”Toosh” McTavish managed to control a long punted ball in the
38th min and he calmly slid the ball under the oncoming Brig’
Goalie. It was to get worse for Brig’ on the stroke of half time when
Western’s playmaker Stevie Gordon picked up the ball and flew past 2 Brig
players with ease and placed the ball into the net to give Western a chance in
the second half as the ref blew with the half time score at 2.2.
The second half was only 16 minutes old
when once again Stevie Gordon picked the ball up this time wide on the
touchline. He preceded to dribble past 3 Brig’ players en route to
lifting the ball over the Brig’ goalie and giving his team a 3.2 lead
after being 2.0 down. Western had a good couple of chances to kill off Brig
with Michie missing a tap in when the ball was played in from the touchline but
unfortunately the cross was just behind him! Brig’ brought on Randy Ross
minus his pink boots today. He was the player who made the difference for
Brig’. He picked up a ball again wide out on the right and he headed
towards goal where he fired a great shot passed the Western keeper to give his
team a deserved point with a mere 8 mins to go. This match was played in a good
spirit with only one yellow card shown to Brigs’ Matty Hay.
In other matches Northstar hammered 15
past Malibu without reply. Daryl Bowes hit a hat trick, while Bobby Rintoul,
Jamie Flett and Paul Rennie each helping themselves to a couple each. Kindness,
Rosie, Gav Duthie, Shaun Flett, Robbie Mearns and Neil Rennie all scored one
each. Northstar sit at the top of the table after 3 matches with a healthy +27
goal difference.
Frigate join Northstar at the top of the
pile also on 9 points with a healthy 7.0 win over Masada. There was one own
goal while 3 players each scored two goals and they were Paul Willox, Leighton
Rafferty, and Ryan Gunn who scored a spectacular free kick which nestled in the
top corner!
Belmont came out victorious in an 11 goal
frenzy v WTR. Jim Duncan scored a brace while there were singles from Cumming,
Dunbar,Hutchieson and Farrer. WTR replied with Aimin Elmejirab netting twice.
Adam Elmejirab, Lewis Mcintosh and Scotty Morgan each helping themselves to one
goal each.
At last McNasty’s register their
first win of the season in a 5.4 win over Grampian Police. Alex Dick scored 4
goals on his return from suspension with Andy Gove scoring once. The Police had
Jay Donald to thank for his double while Craig Forbes and Gavin Fleming netted
a goal each.

Updated Monday 23rd August
On a rare warm sunny day at a very
picturesque Maryculter Brig’O
Dee’ played host to Granite City in Week 2 of the league season. Both
teams started brightly with chances at both ends. Brig’ opened the
scoring in 14 minutes after a shot from close range was handled by a City
player and the referee pointed to the spot. There was no complaint from The
City players as it was a clear handball. Centre Half for the day Mikey Bruce
smashed the ball high into the net to give the superb City keeper no chance.
Brig managed to get into a rhythm after they scored and it was no surprise when
they doubled the scoreline after 29 minutes following a poor clear out from a
City defender. Jim Beaton The Brig’ No 9 made no mistake with drilling
the ball low into the net.
Although there were no more goals in the
second half it was almost one way traffic as Brig’ pounded the City goal
creating chance after chance with the City keeper, young 18 year old Danny
Mathews having a superlative day making some quite magnificent stops on many
occasions throughout the match, but especially the second half! Apart from
hitting the corner of the post and crossbar late on in the second half City did
not create many openings with their captain Cruickshanks ploughing a lone
furrow up front for much of the morning until he was substituted with around 10
minutes to go.
With the final score being 2.0
Brig’ maintain their 100% start to the season with 6 points out a
possible 6 as well as the only team in the league as yet not to concede a
goal! Man of the Match by a long
way went to City Goalkeeper Danny
Mathews who actually plays as a striker on a Saturday with Division 3 Amateur
side Fintray Thistle.
In the other games Table Toppers Great
Western slammed 10 goals past Malibu with Stevie Gordon netting 4 times on his
long awaited return from suspension which included missing the last cup final
of the season. Gregg Morrison scored again. Lewis Mcintosh of WTR added a brace despite his team going
down 8.3 in a high scoring match against Northstar. Quite amazingly Northstar
have 9 different players on their scoresheet after 2 games with Jamie Flett and
Daryl Bowes leading the way with 3 goals each. Click the Stats link to view all
goalscorers… http://www.asafl.co.uk/stats.html
McNasty’s hit the goal trail in
Week 2 with Andy Gove scoring twice and Andy Groundwater netting the other.
More worrying for Mc’Nasty’s is they have now conceded 10 goals in
the first two matches. Belmont secured a point with their 3.3 draw however they
have now accumulated 7 yellow cards and 1 red card already!
Frigate sit on 6 points and in 3rd
place in the table after a 4.0 win against Grampian Police with Kevin McFadden
already on 3 goals after an excellent treble for Frigate on week 2.

Updated Monday 16th August
Match of the Day was billed as
Mc’Nasty’s v Northstar, however this proved to be a very one sided
affair with Northstar winning 7.0 in a very creditable performance and that was
without the prolific Martin Duthie who has decided to take the step up to
Junior Football on a Saturday. Jamie Flett opened the scoring within 5 mins.
Scott Baldwin, Alan Dalglish,Gregg Mc’Donald and Daryl Bowes all scored
one each while Man of The Match Jamie Flett added another 2 goals to kick off
his season with a well taken treble. Mc’Nasty’s started with ten
players before the experienced “Chinger” made up the 11 after 15
minutes. Chris Petty playing his first match back after a while out only
managed 25 minutes before he went down with an injury which resulted in him
being taken off. It went from bad to worse when defender Andy Groundwater also
had to go off injured which is not good news for Mc’Nasty’s as Andy
was out crocked for the latter part of last season too.
Great Western got their campaign off to a fantastic start with a 5.1 win over Granite City. Gregg Morrison grabbed a hat trick while Michael Wilson helped himself to a brace. Nicky Gover replied for Granite. WTR came from behind to beat Malibu 7.3 with the goals shared around the team. Lewis Macintosh also managed a great hat trick, Adam Elmejirab hit a double while Aimin and Rami Elmejirab scored one each. Bright Worji, Milan Nigrini and Ricky Adamson all netted one each in reply. F.C Masada lost 3.0 to Brig’ O Dee’ with Richard Melvin scoring a double and the evergreen Malcolm Robertson opening Brig’s season with his first goal. The final match saw Frigate run out 2.1 winners over Belmont S.C. Steven Hadden and Darren Milne scored one goal each while Scott Dunbar replied for Belmont.

As mentioned earlier this week we have had
our local paper The Evening Express print a full page story on our
disappointment at the Inverdee pitches not being ready for our big kick off
this Sunday. If you have missed this article please click this Evening Express
link http://www.eveningexpress.co.uk/Article.aspx/1870458
There will be a meeting with all Club
Officials after the matches on Sunday to make the draws for all the Cup
competitions excluding The Consolation Cup. Can players also note that if they
accumulated yellow cards to take them over the disciplinary threshold last
season their suspension will start from this Sunday which is Week one of the
new season. This is as
discussed at the AGM in late June. Managers will be given
letters on Sunday regarding players who are involved in this.
Updated Thursday 12th August
Please note that Alan Inglis will be
reffing Mc’Nasty’s V Northstar this Sunday instead of Ian Innes who
will now take charge of Great Western v Granite City. This is due to
Ian’s son Keiron Innes signing for Mc’Nasty’s and therefore
this being a conflict of interest.
We can also mention that Adam Elmejirab
has in fact completed his suspension and is now available for selection from
Week 1 which is this Sunday.
Updated Monday 9th August
Week 1 of our fixtures will be played at
Sheddocksley this Sunday with all games kicking off on time at 10.30 am Sharp!
We still have no new news regarding Inverdee being ready before late September,
however keep a look out in The Evening Express in the next wee while as you may see a few column inches
regarding this huge disappointment for all the players.
Week 2 Fixtures have also been uploaded
to the “Fixtures” tab at the top of this page.

Midweek Fixtures
We can confirm that there will be no need for
midweek fixtures at the start of the season due to Inverdon withdrawing from
the league. In early April 2011 a decision will be taken as to whether midweek
fixtures will be necessary, following winter weather conditions.
Pitch Venues
At present Inverdee is unavailable until as late as
the last weekend in September according to reports from our local council,
however we are doing all we can to try and bring this forward. Keep checking on
further updates as and when they become available.
Updated Wed 4th August 2010
The
league has a new face as secretary and he is Brian Derrett formerly of Masada.
I am sure you will all do your best to help Brian in this challenging role.
There are now 11 teams this season with Inverdon dropping out from the teams
that finished last season.
Schooner
and La Lombarda, both having a name change. Schooner will now be Belmont Social
Club and La Lombarda will be McNastys, but apart from that nothing else will
change. The games will be based at
Inverdee this season subject to the Council having the pitches ready. The start
date is set for Sunday 15th of August
at 10.30am and the first set of fixtures are already up in the Fixtures
section.
There
will be 3 weeks of Tuesday night games to get off to a head start.
Pitches will be booked on Tuesdays for the latter end of the season so there
are no problems if they are needed.
